A Conversation

One of our High Plains Media Award winners had the opportunity to write about a local Kansas City television anchor and his battle with prostate cancer. He sat down with a friend and fellow survivor and had a conversation about the disease and how their stories can help someone else in their fight against prostate cancer.

A special thanks goes out to the iMedia CAPS students in the Blue Valley School District, who produced the video with John Holt and David Emerson.  Thank you all for your help in spreading the awareness message!

Shaving Heads in the name of Hope

The 2012 Shave to Save is recruiting brave men and women willing to raise money to shave their heads, all in the name of hope. For more than 10 years, Shave to Save has helped to raise funds for the American Cancer Society’s Hope Lodge in Kansas City, a place for cancer patients and their families to stay – free of charge – during their treatment.

Funds raised at Shave to Save go directly to fund the Hope Lodge’s day-to-day operations, each day costing $1,000 to keep up and running. While the Lodge relies on the community donations, the shavees who raise money for this event help the most. Each shavee commits to raising $5,000 or more to help our community’s cancer patients get well; helping them focus on their treatment and not their next hotel payment.

Over 160 men and women have gone bald in the past 10 years, and the committee is recruiting more shavees to join this cause.  If you would like to get involved, contact Patty Gerken at pgerken@kumc.edu or log onto shavetosave.org.

Fist launched in Dallas, Texas in the 1970’s, the Cattle Baron’s Ball is the single largest fundraising event for the American Cancer Society.  In 2009, volunteers of the Society brought this social event to southwest Missouri and have since raised over $1.8 million in the fight to cure cancer. It is currently the single largest gala in southwest Missouri.
